Bass Solo - April 2007

Part of "Alien Abductee" by Laurie Gray, recorded in  with Laurie Gray (piano), Scott McKay (drums), and myself. "Alien Abductee" is a kindof free tune, so the sky is the limit! I used my electric upright bass for this track.

...and another version of the same tune, recorded live on BBC Radio Scotland's "Jazz House" programme with Laurie Gray (piano) and Stewart Forbes (sax).

2) Alien Abductee (version 2)

This is a ballad by guitarist Danny short, recorded in April 2007 with Danny Short (guitar), Laurie Gray (piano), Jennifer Clark (EUB), and Michael (drums).

Groove Elation - April 2007

This John Scofield tune was recorded by Ralph Thomson (guitar), Laurie Gray (piano), Jennifer Clark (EUB) and Jamie Flanagan (drums). It's a real jam, with some great moments.

Cosmo's Cousin - March 2006

1) Son of a Preacher Man

All songs performed by Sharon Fehlberg (vocals), Kevin Kelleher (guitar), Jennifer Clark (bass), and Iain McDougall (drums). Recorded at Q10 Studios (formerly Core Studios) in Glasgow. I am very pleased with the bass sound on these recordings, which was achieved by using a mix of the DI out from the back of my Eden WT330 amplifier and a Shure SM7 microphone on my Eden D112XLT speaker cabinet. Both signals were recorded to separate tracks so the blend could be adjusted during mixdown - for example, "Come As You Are" has more speaker than "Son of a Preacher Man", which had about half and half of both.

Jack Patrick - April 2006

Jack is a singer of many years experience who enjoyed the sound of a rhythm section featuring Scott Madden (piano), Jennifer Clark (bass), and Bert Craig (drums). He liked it so much that he decided to record a CD with us at the well known Cava Studios in Glasgow. We recorded a total of twelve songs in seven hours that day, all done totally live, including the vocals. On this session I used my Dean six string bass strung with Rotosound flatwounds along with a mute near the bridge to try to achieve some of the tonal characteristics of a double bass - this way prior to my EUB acquisition, of course! You can download a couple of tunes from the CD here;

1) I Wish You Love

2) The Second Time Around

If you'd like to buy the CD or book the band please contact Jack at his email address, jackpat@jpatrick.fsnet.co.uk

Solo Work - January 2006

These tunes were produced by first recording the drums straight onto stereo cassette. Four microphones were used, one on the bass drum, one on the snare, and two overheads for the rest of the kit and to give a strong stereo image. I played bass along with the drums as they were recorded, although no bass was actually commited to tape at this point. The result has something of an "old school" sound about it, which I was really pleased with. When recording the subsequent bass parts I found myself to continuing to produce this sound almost inadvertently; the sound definitely influenced my playing!

2) Jesu - click to download. This was a bassline I made up for a tune we did in "Glasgow Gospel Choir". My idea was to go for an African Township vibe, with a contrapuntal classical guitar type influence, realised via slap bass. I discovered that slapping with heavy flatwound strings on a six string bass with a fairly high action and narrow string spacing can be a bit tricky. However, you are probably better advised to just listen to it rather than read this drivel!
